US Implements Visa Bonds for Cambodian Nationals

The US State Department has expanded its pilot program to reduce visa overstays, now requiring Cambodian nationals to post a refundable bond when applying for B-1 business or B-2 tourist visas. Effective April 2, 2026, this policy is part of a broader initiative that now covers 50 countries. If a consular officer deems an applicant eligible but a potential overstay risk, they may require a bond of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000.

This change primarily affects Cambodian passport holders, including dual citizens and those living abroad. While the program aims to ensure 97% compliance, it adds a significant financial hurdle for nomads and expats planning short-term travel to the US. Travelers must also note that bond holders are restricted to entering and exiting via commercial airports or CBP preclearance only; land and sea crossings are not permitted under this specific program.

If you are applying for a US visa with a Cambodian passport, follow these steps:

  • Attend your visa interview as usual; the consular officer will determine if a bond is required and set the specific amount.
  • If directed, complete DHS Form I-352 and pay the bond via the official Pay.gov portal.
  • Retain all receipts, as payments made through third parties are not eligible for refunds.
  • Ensure you depart the US before your visa expires to trigger an automatic refund.

The bond is forfeited if the traveler overstays their visit or attempts to adjust their immigration status while in the country. For more nomad news on international travel requirements, stay tuned to our latest briefings.
