Tanzania safari costs set to rise 40% for AFCON as luxury pivot begins

Tanzania is betting on $5 million tourists a year by pairing a Serengeti-area golf course with co-hosting AFCON 2027 and the premium pivot is already reshaping what visitors and long-stayers pay to be there.

The price of a premium pivot

The government is courting private capital for a golf course near Lake Manyara and repositioning parks around the football tournament, which runs June 19 to July 17, 2027 across Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, local reporting confirmed. Park authorities are rebuilding visitor packages to convert match ticket-holders into multi-day safari clients, which points to firmer pricing in the luxury tier through that window.

For context, a standard mid-range Serengeti safari already runs $400 to $600 per person per day in park fees, lodging and guiding. Peak AFCON weeks overlap with the Serengeti's dry-season migration corridor, when lodges typically add a 20% to 40% high-season premium. Anyone planning a 2027 trip that isn't locked in by late 2026 should expect to pay the top of that band or more once golf-package inventory absorbs shoulder rooms.

What it costs to stay longer

Short-stay visitors still route through the eVisa portal, which covers both the mainland and Zanzibar and handles payment and document upload online. Interviews at a Tanzanian embassy are possible on request, the portal notes.

Nomads hoping for a dedicated remote-work track won't find one. Long stays run through the standard Residence Permit Class A, B or C system and applicants generally need a work permit from the Ministry of Labour first, with the residence permit approved before entry. Categories like retirement, research and court attendance are the narrow exceptions. Fees vary by class and nationality and aren't published in a single table, so Tanzania's residency rules need to be priced directly against the applicant's category before booking flights.

A remote worker eyeing three weeks of Serengeti-adjacent lodging during AFCON should budget for a realistic $8,400 to $12,600 at mid-range daily rates before the peak premium and materially more if golf-tier inventory pulls standard lodges upmarket.
