Saudi Arabia Locks Down Mecca Entry Through May 31

Mecca is, frankly, off-limits to almost everyone right now. Starting April 13, 2026, Saudi Arabia enforced strict entry controls into the holy city under its "No Hajj without a permit" policy and the list of people who can actually get through a checkpoint is very short.
Who gets in: valid Hajj permit holders, residents with a Mecca-issued residency ID and workers with official Holy Sites permits. That's it. Tourists, business visitors, transit passengers and Umrah pilgrims are all turned back, it doesn't matter what visa they're holding.
The Umrah deadline is, turns out, the most urgent pressure point for travelers already in-country. All Umrah visa holders must exit Saudi Arabia by April 18, 2026 , the same date a penalty-free exit window closes for visitors on expired short-term visas (visit, family and business categories). Miss that date and you're looking at fines.
Umrah permit issuance is suspended entirely from April 18 through May 31, across all categories on the Nusuk platform , citizens, expats, GCC nationals included. The Hajj pilgrimage itself runs approximately May 25,30, which is why the whole system is locked until the end of the month.
Roughly 14 nationalities face additional temporary suspensions on visit and Umrah visas during this period:
- Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia
- Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sudan, Tunisia, Yemen
If you're a digital nomad or short-term visitor holding a tourist or business visa, Mecca simply isn't accessible to you right now and honestly no workaround exists. Checkpoints are enforced on all entry routes and violations carry punitive consequences.
What to do:
- If you're on an Umrah visa, exit Saudi Arabia before April 18
- If you're on an expired short-stay visa, use the penalty-free window , it closes the same day
- Hajj access requires a valid permit issued through Absher Individuals, Muqeem Portal or the Tasreeh platform , no permit, no entry, full stop
- Check the latest visa updates before booking any Saudi itinerary through June
