Increased minimum income thresholds for residency in Portugal and Greece directly raise the financial barrier for remote workers seeking long-term European visas.

Rising Income Bars for European Residency

European residency remains a top goal for remote workers, but the financial entry point is shifting. Countries like Portugal and Spain link their visa requirements directly to national minimum wage increases. When those wages go up, the income you need to prove for a visa follows suit immediately.

Portugal’s minimum wage rose to €920 per month in January, which significantly impacts its popular residency tracks. For the D8 Digital Nomad Visa, applicants must now show monthly earnings of at least €3,680 (four times the minimum wage). The D7 Passive Income Visa is also affected, requiring a base of €920 per month plus additional amounts for spouses and children.

Spain followed a similar path in February with a 3.1% increase to its minimum wage. This puts the income requirement for the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa at approximately €2,849 per month for a single applicant. Meanwhile, Greece has kept its threshold stable at €3,500 net monthly income, providing a consistent, if higher, benchmark for those looking toward the Mediterranean.

These changes primarily affect long-term residency seekers and digital nomads. Short-term tourists on 90-day Schengen stays are not impacted. If you are bringing family, be prepared for steeper proof-of-funds requirements; most countries add a percentage of the base income for every dependent.

To stay ahead of these visa updates, start by gathering your remote work contracts or passive income statements from the last three to six months. Most applications require:

  • Proof of remote employment or foreign-sourced income
  • A clean criminal record from your home country
  • Private health insurance with local coverage
  • A formal lease or accommodation agreement

Application fees generally range from €75 to €170 depending on the country, and processing times typically sit between 10 and 60 days. Check our country guides for destination-specific details and step-by-step application checklists.
