Neos Milan to Kilimanjaro flights cut up to $400 in Tanzania travel costs

A weekly nonstop between Milan and Kilimanjaro cut a chunk of connection cost out of the Europe-to-Tanzania run this month, though the headline "$400 savings" figure isn't backed by any government fee change.

The route and what it replaces

Neos began weekly Boeing 787-9 service from Milan Malpensa to Kilimanjaro International Airport on July 15, continuing to Zanzibar. The inaugural carried more than 210 passengers and the schedule runs every Wednesday through Oct. 20.

Connecting itineraries from Europe to Kilimanjaro typically route through Doha, Addis Ababa or Nairobi, adding a second checked-bag fee, a layover meal and often an overnight. Removing the connection is where the savings sit, not in any Tanzanian government charge. Neos hasn't published a fare comparison, so the "up to $400" figure attributed to the new service reflects avoided ancillary and layover costs on a typical routing, not a fee cut.

What Tanzania actually charges at the border

Visa costs haven't moved. The Immigration Services Department still runs applications through its official eVisa portal, with processing quoted at 10 days:

• Ordinary tourist visa: $50 for most nationalities
• Multiple-entry visa: $100, required for U.S. passport holders
• Transit visa: $30

The department warns that any invoice higher than the posted Ordinary fee usually means an unauthorized agent is in the middle. Payment on the government portal runs through Visa or MasterCard and passports must have six months of validity plus a return ticket on file. The same visa covers mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, which matters for anyone using the Neos routing to chain a safari week with beach time.

What it means for a nomad budget

For a remote worker basing in northern Tanzania for a month around the safari circuit, the Milan nonstop trims roughly one travel day off each end versus a two-stop itinerary. On a $100 U.S. multiple-entry visa plus a round-trip through Kilimanjaro, the real saving is fewer baggage fees, one fewer hotel night and a Wednesday-anchored return window rather than a $400 line item on the receipt.
