Namibia replaced 2-year business stays with 5-year Employment Permits Sept. 1

Namibia replaced its standard two-year commercial residency with a five-year Employment Permit to Conduct Business on Sept. 1, extending validity for qualifying foreign founders and investors.

The shift from 2-year to 5-year commercial stays

Foreign investors establishing or managing an enterprise in the country previously relied on standard two-year general employment permits. The Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security shifted that framework to offer five-year permits specifically for foreign business owners.

Applications must be submitted through the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB), the agency confirmed. The state set the permit fee at NAD 2,600 ($145) per year, matching the annual rate of the legacy general employment permit.

Distinguishing commercial permits from nomad and contract visas

The five-year permit serves investors running an in-country enterprise and doesn't alter rules for short-term project staff or remote workers. Foreign nationals entering the country fall under three distinct categories:

• Employment Permit to Conduct Business: Valid up to 5 years for foreign investors and business owners managing registered local operations.

• Short Term Employment Permit: Valid for up to 6 months for temporary corporate assignments, technical installations or media projects tied to a local employer, carrying a NAD 1,000 ($56) fee.

• Digital Nomad Visa: Valid for up to 6 months for location-independent remote workers employed outside the country, with local employment strictly prohibited.

Entrepreneurs weighing Namibia's residency rules must note that the new five-year route requires operational investment and routing via NIPDB. Founders currently on standard two-year permits who plan to extend their stay can transition to the five-year validity during their next renewal cycle through the investment board, while remote workers earning foreign income must continue using the dedicated nomad visa.
