Malaysia's eVisa Now Open to All Visa-Required Nationalities

Malaysia's eVisa system now accepts applications from any foreign national whose country maintains diplomatic relations with Malaysia and requires a visa for entry , no embassy visit, no paper submission, no queue. It's, turns out, one of the cleaner digital rollouts in Southeast Asia right now.

The system covers single-entry (SEV) and multiple-entry visas (MEV) for tourism, business, medical treatment and wedding tourism. Processing takes 48 hours on working days, the approved visa arrives by email and fees typically run MYR 100,500+ depending on visa type. Not complicated.

Who it affects most:

  • Tourists from visa-required countries who previously had to submit paperwork through an embassy can now handle everything online, which is honestly a significant time saver
  • Digital nomads using the DE Rantau Nomad Pass (which requires a separate approval first, then an eVisa for actual entry) get a cleaner path in , the program requires $24,000+ USD annual income and offers 3-12 month stays, renewable
  • Expats on MEVs or seeking endorsements for employment and investor passes also benefit from the fully digital flow

Visa-exempt nationals , including many ASEAN passport holders, plus Chinese and Indian nationals under a visa-free extension running through December 31 , don't need this at all, but they do need to complete the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) before arrival.

One thing to watch: Employment Pass salary thresholds are being revised effective June 1, so expats being hired into Malaysia should confirm their offer meets the new floor before that date.

To apply, head to the official Malaysian Immigration eVisa portal with your passport details, digital photo, travel itinerary, proof of funds and onward travel documentation. The visa is emailed on approval, print it or have it ready on your phone and you're done. Tourist visas don't permit local employment, that's a firm line, don't test it.
