Ireland students must apply for Stamp 2 bridging permission by Aug. 31

How Ireland’s bridging permission works

Ireland’s Immigration Service Delivery has set up a temporary Stamp 2 bridging permission for eligible non-EEA students moving from English-language courses into higher education. The permit covers a legal stay until Sept. 30, 2026 and starts from the expiry date of the student’s current Irish Residence Permit.

It is a short-term fix for students who would otherwise hit a gap between programs. The permission keeps standard Stamp 2 work rights in place, so holders can work up to 20 hours a week during term and 40 hours during holiday periods. For more visa updates, check our latest coverage.

Who can use it

The bridge is for international students who have completed a qualifying English-language pathway and are moving on to an ILEP-listed higher education course. That includes degree programs, Higher National Diplomas and similar courses. It doesn't apply to tourists, digital nomads or general expats.

Applicants must hold an in-date IRP card or one expired within one month of applying and must have followed the rules of their current permission. They also need proof of enrollment and full fee payment for a higher education course starting by the end of October 2026.

What students need to do next

Applications opened May 1 and close Aug. 31. They must be filed online through ISD’s portal and the bridging permission can't be extended beyond Sept. 30, 2026. Students whose second or third English-language course ended on or after July 1 are fee-exempt; others pay the standard €300 ($325) renewal fee.

Once the degree or diploma program begins, students have to switch to the correct long-stay Stamp 2 or Stamp 2A permission. Read our full Ireland guide for the complete picture.
