Guatemala’s dedicated residency pathway for remote workers provides a streamlined legal framework for those looking to stay in the Land of Eternal Spring beyond the standard 90-day tourist window. Established via the Instituto Guatemalteco de Migración (IGM), the program removes the previous requirement for a local guarantor, making it significantly easier for foreigners to secure residency while working for companies abroad. The residency is typically granted for one to five years and is renewable, provided the applicant continues to meet the income criteria.
Who can apply
This pathway is designed for digital nomads, freelancers, and remote employees who earn their income from sources outside of Guatemala. To qualify, solo applicants must demonstrate a stable monthly income of at least $2,000, while those bringing dependents must show at least $3,000. The program is particularly family-friendly; dependents can apply simultaneously and are even granted authorization to work locally if they choose.
How the process works
Applicants can enter the country on a standard tourist visa and begin the process at the IGM office in Guatemala City. The transition from tourist to resident takes approximately two to four months. You will need to prepare several specific documents:
- A valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity.
- An apostilled criminal background check covering the last two years.
- Proof of foreign employment or self-employment, such as contracts or bank statements.
- A health certificate and official application forms.
The total cost for the first year, including application fees and the annual quota, generally ranges between $300 and $400. Once approved, residents receive a carnet that serves as their official identification. It is important to remember that while this program simplifies your stay, you will become a tax resident if you remain in the country for more than 183 days in a calendar year.
