Guatemala deploys 65 officers for Aug. 1 police escorts from El Salvador

Guatemala's tourism, police and road-safety agencies run a coordinated escort and roadside-assistance operation along the main corridors from El Salvador each August and this year's activation covers the Fiestas Agostinas week from Aug. 1 to Aug. 6.

What happens at the border and on the road

Land travelers entering through Valle Nuevo, Pedro de Alvarado, Nueva Anguiatú and San Cristóbal are met by staff from the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT) and officers from the National Civil Police tourist division, known as Disetur. Between 56 and 65 trained personnel are stationed at border posts and major destinations including Guatemala City, Antigua, Lake Atitlán, Izabal and Petén.

Police hand out route information at the crossings and run escorted accompaniment along designated "rutas asistidas" from the border into tourist hubs. On the highways, the road-safety agency Provial patrols the El Salvador,Guatemala corridors with tow trucks and traffic units ready to move broken-down vehicles to safe areas. INGUAT projects around 79,000 Salvadoran visitors during the week and the plan also covers other foreign tourists, expats and nomads crossing by land.

What travelers actually need to do

Nothing changes about entry paperwork. Standard passport, CA-4 regional rules and vehicle documents still apply and there's no pre-registration, fee or mandatory insurance tied to the escort service. The convoys and route patrols are free and voluntary.

To join an assisted route, travelers need to be at the border crossing during operating hours and coordinate on the spot with Disetur or INGUAT staff, who set the departure timing. Two numbers are worth saving before crossing: 1500 for INGUAT's 24/7 assistance line in Spanish and English and +502 5163-1499 for the police tourist line, which works by phone or WhatsApp for real-time escort requests or incident reports.

Drivers should budget extra time at Valle Nuevo and Pedro de Alvarado, the two busiest crossings during the holiday week and time their arrival to catch a scheduled convoy rather than pushing on alone through the highland stretches after dark.
