Hong Kong Updates Visa Renewal Window for Talent Schemes
The Hong Kong Immigration Department has expanded the visa renewal filing window from four weeks to 90 days for six major talent schemes, including the GEP and QMAS. This change allows expats more time to process extensions and significantly reduces the risk of accidental overstaying.
Hong Kong Updates Visa Renewal Window for Talent Schemes
Hong Kong has officially extended the visa renewal application window for six major talent schemes. As of March 1, 2026, eligible visa holders can submit their extension-of-stay applications up to 90 days before their current visa expires. This is a significant jump from the previous four-week limit, giving residents more breathing room to manage their paperwork.
The update applies to several popular pathways, including the General Employment Policy (GEP), the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme (QMAS), and the Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG). This change aligns these categories with the Top Talent Pass Scheme, which already moved to a 90-day window late last year.
Who is affected
This policy shift primarily benefits expats and skilled professionals currently living in Hong Kong under employment or talent-based visas. It also covers their dependants, provided the renewal is filed alongside the principal applicant.
While Hong Kong does not have a dedicated digital nomad visa, remote workers who have secured residency through the QMAS or GEP schemes will find this update helpful for maintaining their legal status. It is important to note that this extension does not apply to tourists, short-term trainees, or stand-alone dependant renewals sponsored by permanent residents.
What to do
If your visa is set to expire soon, you can now start the renewal process three months in advance. Applicants must be physically present in Hong Kong at the time of submission. The process remains digital, with applications submitted via the Immigration Department’s online portal.
To stay compliant, you should prepare the following:
- A valid travel document and your Hong Kong ID card.
- Proof of continued employment or eligibility under your specific scheme.
- Evidence of Hong Kong residence and recent tax documents.
Processing times typically hover around two to three weeks. Filing early is highly recommended to avoid any risk of overstaying, which can reset the clock on the seven-year requirement for permanent residency. Check our latest nomad news for more updates on regional travel.
