Hong Kong launches 5 second Seamless e-Channel at HZMB on June 25

Five-second facial recognition arrives at the HZMB
Hong Kong's Immigration Department will open its Seamless e-Channel at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge departure hall on June 25, clearing pre-enrolled travelers in about five seconds as they walk through without showing any documents.
The system uses AI image analysis and facial recognition to verify identities in real time. Enrolled users face forward, keep walking at normal pace and skip both the smart ID card tap and the QR code step required at older e-Channels. Traditional contactless and fingerprint e-Channels stay in place at every other control point, the department said.
Who qualifies for the walk-through lane
The pilot is restricted to Hong Kong permanent residents aged 11 or above holding a valid smart identity card. Applicants must have crossed the HZMB Passenger Clearance Building at least 10 times in the past 90 days, a threshold designed for cross-border commuters working or studying in Zhuhai and Macao.
ImmD estimates roughly 50,000 travelers meet the criteria at launch, about 20% of HZMB passenger flow. Digital nomads, foreign professionals on employment visas and short-stay visitors are excluded from this lane regardless of crossing frequency. Non-residents who qualify as frequent visitors can still enroll in the standard visitor e-Channel separately.
Travelers aged 11 to 17 need parental or guardian consent to enroll.
How to enroll before June 25
Enrollment is free and runs through the Contactless e-Channel mobile app on a smartphone with biometric authentication. After binding identity in the app, eligible residents can add the Seamless e-Channel option. Once registered, the QR code generation step is no longer needed at HZMB departure.
ImmD hasn't published a separate privacy impact assessment for the new system, though the agency says biometric data is used only for immigration clearance and travelers can still opt for fingerprint e-Channels or manned counters. Enrollment questions go to the ImmD hotline at +852 2824 6111 or enquiry@immd.gov.hk.
