Hong Kong Updates e-Channel Access for Frequent Visitors

Hong Kong has officially lowered the barrier for frequent travelers to access its automated e-Channel immigration service. As of February 27, 2026, the entry threshold for enrollment has been reduced from three visits per year to just two entries via Hong Kong International Airport within the past 24 months.

This policy change aims to slash processing times for repeat visitors, including digital nomads and business travelers who frequently move through the region. The Immigration Department has also eliminated the fingerprint requirement for e-passport holders during the enrollment process, moving toward a more seamless facial recognition system.

Who qualifies for faster clearance

The updated rules benefit a wide range of travelers, specifically targeting those who maintain a consistent presence in the city. To be eligible, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old and hold a valid travel document.
  • Have completed at least two successful entries via the airport in the last two years.
  • Have no adverse immigration record in Hong Kong.

Digital nomads on multiple-visit visas or those utilizing Hong Kong as a regional hub will find this particularly useful. By bypassing manual counters, travelers can avoid peak-hour queues that often stretch to 45 minutes, potentially improving throughput by 20%.

How to enroll

Enrollment is free of charge and can be completed at designated counters in the airport arrivals hall or at the Immigration Tower in Wan Chai. You will need to present your passport and have a photo taken for the facial recognition database. No prior appointment is necessary; however, you must enroll in person to link your travel document to the automated system.

Once registered, you can use the e-Channels at all air, sea, and land control points. If you hold an e-passport, the system will use biometric facial recognition to verify your identity. Those with older documents will continue to use fingerprint verification. Check the latest nomad news to stay informed on regional border changes.
