Colombia Digital Nomad visa requires $1,435 monthly income and 183 day tax rule

How the Type V visa works
Colombia's Digital Nomad (Type V) visa, created by Resolution 5477 of 2022, lets remote workers and online entrepreneurs live in the country for up to two years while serving foreign companies or clients. The Cancillería classifies it as a visitor category, so time on the visa doesn't count toward permanent residency or citizenship.
Holders can't work for Colombian employers or bill Colombian clients. Dependents can join as beneficiaries but face the same restriction.
The financial bar is three times the Colombian monthly minimum wage, which works out to roughly COP 5,252,715 or about $1,435, for 2026. Applicants must show that amount in each of the three months before applying, proven through personal bank statements rather than invoices or tax returns. Government fees run around $170 to $180, with most applications filed through the foreign ministry's online portal or a consulate.
Who hits the 183-day tax line
The visa itself doesn't make anyone a Colombian tax resident, but physical presence does. Spending 183 days or more in any rolling 365-day period, counting entry and exit days, triggers tax residency under Colombian law as summarized in OECD guidance.
Once resident, individuals owe Colombian tax on worldwide income and must file annually with DIAN. Non-residents are generally taxed only on Colombian-source income, which is why many nomads structure stays to fall short of the threshold.
The rule cuts across categories:
- Tourists entering visa-free for up to 90 days, often extendable to 180 per calendar year, stay safely under the line if they leave.
- Type V holders who settle in for the full two years almost certainly cross it.
- Migrant, investment and marriage-visa holders face the same 183-day test regardless of their immigration status.
Practitioners report tighter scrutiny on Type V renewals, with some denials when authorities conclude the holder is using the visitor permit as de facto long-term residency.
What applicants need to file
The standard document set includes a passport valid at least six months, proof of remote work for foreign entities (employer letter, freelance contracts or foreign company ownership documents), three to six months of bank statements, health insurance covering the full stay with hospitalization and repatriation, an apostilled criminal background certificate and a motivational letter.
Renewals require meeting every requirement again at current thresholds.
