China slashes Z visa wait times to 10 days for science graduates

China’s 2026 visa changes give high-tech talent and investors direct access to 5- to 10-year long-term residence visas. Holders can move within approved regions without extra endorsements and eligible applicants can use green channels that cut approvals to as little as 3 working days.
The rules also make room for families. Dependents can be processed at the same time, which shortens the move for expats approved under the talent or investor tracks.
Foreign graduates get an easier work route
Foreign graduates in science, engineering and other high-demand fields can now apply for Z visas without the old 2-year work-experience requirement. Priority processing can bring approval times down to 10 working days.
The change mainly affects master’s graduates from Chinese universities and strong candidates from top overseas schools. Tourists and short-term visitors won’t see much direct impact, since the updates target employment and investment, not travel.
What applicants should prepare next
Applicants still need to meet local eligibility rules, including proof of talent, investment or a qualifying degree. Health checks and police clearances remain part of the process and work applicants need a job offer in a relevant field.
The changes build on the R visa rollout from Oct. 1, 2025, which also targets young STEM talent without employer sponsorship. For the latest policy shifts, check our visa updates and read our full China guide for the complete picture.
