Canada Cuts 6 Air Canada Routes as Fuel Costs Bite

The program/policy
Air Canada is trimming six routes after jet fuel prices, driven up by the Iran conflict, made parts of its network too expensive to run. The cuts hit Toronto-JFK, Montreal-JFK, a planned Guadalajara-Montreal service, plus several domestic and transborder routes and the airline says the change affects about 1% of annual capacity.

It’s a blunt move, honestly and one that shows how fast fuel shocks can reshape route maps. The airline says it reviews profitability regularly, but when fuel jumps from about $2.50 a gallon to more than $4, some flights stop penciling out, weirdly fast.

Who it affects
Digital nomads, expats and frequent flyers between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico will feel this most. The biggest annoyance is the summer cut to JFK service, since Toronto and Montreal travelers will need to reroute through LaGuardia or Newark or lean on Air Canada partners.

That’s still workable, but it’s less direct and more expensive, frankly, especially if you’re juggling luggage, remote work or a tight transfer. Air Canada says it still has 34 daily flights to the New York area from six Canadian cities, so the market isn’t disappearing, just getting thinner.

What to do
Check your booking now if you’re flying one of the affected routes and watch for Air Canada’s rebooking contact. The airline says it’s handling changes proactively, so you shouldn’t assume your itinerary is safe just because it’s still ticketed.

  • Fort McMurray-Vancouver ends May 28
  • JFK-Toronto and JFK-Montreal run only June 1 to October 25
  • Salt Lake City-Toronto pauses June 30
  • Yellowknife-Toronto ends August 30
  • Guadalajara-Montreal is shelved for now
