Canada’s IEC and study-permit rules shift for nomads

The program/policy , Canada’s International Experience Canada (IEC) pool is still moving fast, with 62,714 Invitations to Apply issued year-to-date by mid-April, about 55% of the 2026 quota. That’s a lot of movement, honestly and the pace has been uneven, with one early-April round topping 7,000 invites and another on April 10 adding 2,297 more.

IEC is for young people from partner countries, usually 18-35 depending on nationality and it still runs through Working Holiday, Young Professionals and Co-op streams. The season opened December 19, 2025, invitations started the week of January 19 and 27,651 candidates were still waiting in the pools on April 10.

Who it affects , This matters for working holiday travelers, early-career expats and students doing mandatory placements. Canada’s separate co-op work permit rule changed on April 1 and eligible post-secondary students no longer need that extra permit for approved co-ops, internships or practicums, which cuts out a second application and a pile of paperwork, weirdly overdue but useful.

Secondary school students still need the permit. Remote workers are in a different bucket, though, because Canada still has no standalone digital nomad visa and foreign-employed nomads can usually stay as visitors for up to six months, sometimes up to one year on entry if they can show they’re working remotely.

What to do , If you’re in an IEC country, keep checking your pool, because IRCC posts round results every Friday and the remaining spots can move quickly. If you’re a student, confirm your placement is mandatory, approved by your school and capped at 50% or less of the program before you rely on the co-op exemption.

Remote workers should be careful here, since Canadian-source income changes the rules fast and the old in-country work-permit workaround has ended. That’s the real risk, frankly.
