Brazil lets nomads switch to VITEM XIV status within 30 days of arrival

Brazil’s nomad permit now allows in-country status conversion
Brazil’s VITEM XIV digital nomad route now lets eligible travelers switch into status within 30 days of arrival without leaving the country. The change also simplifies income proof and lets certain dependents file online after the principal applicant gets a Federal Police protocol number.
The update follows changes to Normative Resolution 45/2021 and a new electronic filing interface from the Ministry of Justice, according to São Paulo immigration firm ZS Advogados. The rule change sits under Decree 12,657/2025, which reworked Brazil’s temporary-residence categories.
Who the update reaches
The streamlined process affects remote workers, freelancers and entrepreneurs earning foreign-source income. It also applies to visa-free visitors who decide to stay longer and work remotely, plus families seeking to file dependents online instead of booking another consular appointment.
For entry, Brazil still expects proof of foreign income or savings. The reported threshold is $1,400 a month or $17,000 in savings under the new guidance, while older guidance still cites $1,500 monthly or $18,000 in savings.
What applicants need to file
Applicants can now prove income with either six months of bank statements or a single annual tax return that shows the minimum income. Dependents can file online once the main applicant’s protocol number is issued and travelers who enter visa-free or on the e-Visa for U.S., Australian and Canadian nationals can switch status without exiting Brazil if they file on time.
Paperwork still includes an apostilled criminal background check, health insurance with $30,000 minimum coverage, proof of accommodation and Portuguese translations by certified translators. Officials also require color scans no larger than 5 MB each.
