Brazil fines nonresidents up to 75% for missing the March 23 tax deadline

Brazil’s IRPF 2026 filing window runs from March 23 to May 29 and the late-filing penalty can climb to 75% of tax due in cases of false or aggravating declarations. The standard fine is lower, but the Receita Federal still sets a minimum penalty of R$165.74 even when no tax is owed.
Residents must report worldwide income, foreign bank accounts, crypto holdings and offshore assets. Monthly foreign income that doesn’t have automatic withholding also falls under Carnê-Leão, the self-assessment system that requires payment by the last business day of the next month.
Digital nomads and expats face different thresholds
Foreigners who stay in Brazil for 183 days or more within any consecutive 12-month period become tax residents, including holders of the VITEM XIV digital nomad visa. Once they cross that line, the filing duty applies even if their income is earned abroad.
Short-term visitors under 183 days generally don’t owe IRPF on foreign income. They can still face withholding tax on Brazilian-sourced income and nomads who convert currency into reais also pay 0.38% IOF on the exchange.
What to sort out before May 29
Tax residents should file through the Meu Imposto de Renda portal and make sure foreign income, assets and crypto are reported correctly. Separate reporting rules may also apply to offshore holdings, with foreign asset declarations carrying penalties of R$2,500 to R$250,000 for late or false filings.
Missing the deadline can get expensive fast, especially for expats who plan to stay long term. Read our full Brazil guide for the complete picture and check our visa updates for more country rules.
