Brazil Expands Visa-Free Entry for Eight Countries

Brazil is opening its borders more widely to several nations as part of its Open Doors 2026 strategy. Effective February 24, 2026, citizens from China, Denmark, France, Hungary, Ireland, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, and the Bahamas can enter the country without a visa for short-term stays.

This policy allows travelers from these eight nations to stay for up to 30 days, with the option to extend that stay to a total of 90 days within any 12-month period. The waiver is currently a pilot program designed to boost tourism and business visits, with officials evaluating its permanent status later this year based on arrival data.

Who is affected

While the new waiver simplifies travel for those eight countries, it highlights a continuing divide for others. Travelers from the United States, Canada, and Australia are still excluded from visa-free entry. Due to Brazil's reciprocity policy reinstated in April 2025, citizens of these three nations must continue to obtain an e-Visa before arrival.

For remote workers, it is important to remember that these visa-free entries and standard e-Visas strictly prohibit remunerated work for Brazilian companies. Digital nomads looking for longer stays should still look toward the dedicated Digital Nomad Visa, which requires a minimum monthly income of $1,500 from foreign sources and offers a one-year residency.

What to do

If you are a citizen of one of the newly exempt countries, you only need an ordinary passport valid for at least six months. You should be prepared to show proof of funds and onward travel to Federal Police if requested upon arrival.

For those from the US, Canada, or Australia, the visa updates process remains digital. You must apply for an e-Visa online, which carries an $80.90 fee. Requirements include:

  • A passport scan and digital photo.
  • Proof of a return flight.
  • A bank statement showing at least $2,000 in available funds.

Processing generally takes a few business days, and the e-Visa allows for stays of up to 90 days per visit.
