Belgium Travel Paralyzed by Nationwide Strikes

A massive wave of industrial action is currently grounding flights and halting trains across Belgium. The disruption began with a 72-hour rail strike on March 8 and is set to peak on March 12 with a comprehensive general strike. This nationwide "Day of Action" involves all major union confederations protesting federal austerity measures and pension reforms.

The impact on regional transit is severe. National rail operator SNCB reports that only about one in three trains are running through Wednesday night. International services like Eurostar and TGV have slashed their schedules between Brussels, Paris, and London. Digital nomads relying on public transport to reach co-working spaces or transit hubs should expect significant delays or total cancellations.

Air travel faces the steepest challenges on March 12. Brussels Airport (BRU) has cancelled all departing passenger flights, affecting over 65,000 travelers. Meanwhile, Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL) will shut down entirely for the day. While some arriving flights might land, limited staffing for security and baggage handling means long waits are inevitable.

Expats and remote workers currently in the country should also prepare for closures beyond the transport sector. Government offices, schools, and municipal services are operating at minimum capacity. This includes many consular services, which may lead to the postponement of visa or residence permit appointments.

If you are scheduled to fly out of Belgium this week, check your flight status immediately. Major carriers like Lufthansa and Brussels Airlines are offering free rebooking for travel through March 19. If you must travel on March 12, your best bet is to transit overland to nearby hubs like Amsterdam Schiphol or Paris Charles de Gaulle before the general strike begins.
