What the remote work visa and points system do

South Africa’s Remote Work Visitor Visa lets foreign nationals live in the country while working for overseas employers or clients. It took effect Oct. 9, 2024 and allows stays of up to 3 years, with applicants generally showing a gross annual income of ZAR 650,796 and a valid foreign employment contract.

The same reform package brought in a points-based system for certain work visas on the same date. The Department of Home Affairs has also tied broader immigration changes to a digital eVisa and ETA portal, plus proposed merit-based pathways for permanent residency and citizenship.

Who the rules affect

Remote workers are the clearest winners. The visa gives nomads a legal way to stay in South Africa without taking local jobs, but it doesn't allow work for South African entities.

Work visa applicants face a separate screening system that weighs qualifications, experience, job offers and language. The wider reform plan also touches permanent residency and citizenship, while tighter asylum rules mainly affect people seeking protection, not tourists or short-stay visitors.

What applicants need to prepare

Remote work visa applicants need three months of bank statements, proof of income, a valid passport and, where relevant, a yellow fever certificate. They also need to register with the South African Revenue Service after 183 days in a 12-month period if tax rules apply.
