Mainland Tanzania now requires a health declaration from all arriving nomads

What arriving travelers now face

Every traveler entering mainland Tanzania must now complete an online health surveillance form, either before departure or on arrival and keep the confirmation QR code or reference number for port health officers. The Ministry of Health set the rule in Travel Advisory No. 18, issued Oct. 17 and effective immediately, Xinhua reported. Until then, the form applied only to travelers arriving from or transiting through the Democratic Republic of Congo or Uganda.

The expansion follows the Ebola outbreak in Congo and cases in neighboring Kenya. Airports, land borders and seaports now run health screening that includes temperature checks. Travelers the ministry classifies as high risk face 21 days of daily health monitoring and must reply to messages even after leaving Tanzania. That monitoring doesn't apply automatically to every visitor, VisasNews reported.

Which nomads must file and how

The rule turns on arrival, not on visa type, nationality or departure country. Short-stay nomads, long-stay remote workers and foreign residents coming back from a trip abroad all fall under it on each entry to the mainland. Where clients or employers are based and tax residency play no role. Foreigners already inside the country only meet it at their next international arrival.

The form sits on the ministry's AfyaMsafiri portal. It asks for passport and arrival details, flight and seat number, purpose and length of stay, local address, contact details and a 21-day travel and symptom history, per a VisasNews test. Each traveler, children included, files separately. Filing online before the flight and saving a screenshot of the QR code avoids doing the paperwork in the arrival hall. The form is separate from the $44 travel insurance in force since Oct. 1 and from any visa or e-Visa. More entry basics are in our Tanzania guide.

Zanzibar runs its own form

Zanzibar has a separate health authority and portal. Its Oct. 9 advisory names arrivals from or via Congo, Uganda or Kenya, while its portal describes declarations as mandatory for arriving travelers more broadly, VisasNews reported. Nomads flying straight to Zanzibar should check that portal before departure.

Frequently asked questions

Does the health form apply to nomads who aren't coming from Ebola-affected countries?
Yes. Since Oct. 17 it applies to everyone entering mainland Tanzania regardless of nationality or departure country.
When should the form be filled in?
The advisory allows submission before departure or on arrival. Travelers must keep the QR code or reference number for port health officers.
Does it replace Tanzania's travel insurance or visa?
No. The declaration is separate from the $44 travel insurance requirement in force since Oct. 1 and from any visa or e-Visa procedure.
Is there a 21-day quarantine?
No blanket quarantine. Only travelers classified as high risk face 21 days of daily health monitoring by message and they must respond even after leaving Tanzania.
Does the mainland form cover Zanzibar?
No. Zanzibar has its own health authority and portal and travelers flying directly there should follow its separate procedure.
