Spain has added an official English-language interface to its Plataforma ONE immigration portal, giving non-Spanish speakers direct access to instructions and filing steps for the country's international telework residence permit.

The government published an English-language pathway on one.gob.es, providing translated navigation and procedural outlines for remote workers seeking residency under Spain's Startup Law (Law 14/2013).

The update marks the first time official online instructions on the portal have been accessible without third-party translation tools, though the underlying submission architecture remains tied to standard Spanish administrative systems.

Applicants navigating Spain's residency rules still need to interact with domestic public administration platforms to submit their files. Online processing requires electronic identity verification through a digital certificate or Spain's Cl@ve authentication system and government filing fee 038 must still be paid via form 790.

The primary benefit of the portal update is procedural clarity for applicants managing their own filings, rather than a restructuring of how files are processed.

Applying from abroad versus inside Spain

The English interface clarifies the two distinct legal routes available to remote workers, but it doesn't remove existing consular requirements for those applying outside the country. Remote workers must choose between two tracks depending on where they are physically located:

• Consular visa route: Applicants living abroad must apply for a national Telework D Visa through the Spanish consulate with jurisdiction over their residence. The resulting visa grants a stay of up to one year. In some jurisdictions, applicants must attend in-person appointments at outsourced visa processing centers; the Spanish consulate in Washington, for example, required all telework filings to go through the BLS Spain Visa Application Center starting Sept. 1.

• In-country residence permit route: Non-EU nationals who enter Spain legally, including on short-term tourist stays, can bypass the consular visa and apply directly for a three-year residence permit through the Large Business and Strategic Collectives Unit (UGE-CE). This route uses the MI-T application form for primary earners and the MI-F form for dependents.

The digital portal primarily benefits applicants already in Spain who choose the direct three-year permit, as consular submissions remain governed by local embassy and visa center appointment procedures.

Core requirements and income limits

The legal standards governing telework permits remain unchanged following the portal update. Qualifying applicants must be non-EU and non-EEA nationals who carry out remote professional activity using digital systems.

To qualify for either track, applicants must meet specific professional and financial baselines:

• Income threshold: Applicants must demonstrate earnings equal to at least 200% of Spain's minimum wage (SMI). Under consular guidelines, this equals €2,442 ($2,637) per month for a solo applicant, with additional financial requirements for each accompanying family member.

• Employer tenure: Remote employees must prove their foreign employer has operated for at least one year, with their individual employment contract in place for at least three months before filing.

• Spanish client limits: Self-employed freelancers can take on Spanish clients, but earnings derived from Spanish entities can't exceed 20% of their total professional activity.

• Professional qualifications: Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited university or document at least three years of direct professional experience in their field.

The catch that catches many remote workers off guard is the requirement for employer social security coverage. Applicants working as regular foreign employees must show that their employer is registered with Spanish social security or that a bilateral social security agreement exempts them, which often forces remote workers into freelance contracts before they can successfully file.

Unverified features and procedural limits

While the bilingual portal is live, several technical capabilities reported by third-party visa agencies remain unconfirmed by official government announcements. Government documentation doesn't verify claims that the portal now auto-validates cryptographic passport chips, uses automated verification for apostilled background checks or enables direct corporate reclassification of other permit types.

Official guidance also doesn't substantiate claims of specific application return rates. Government documentation indicates that while the front-end guidance is now bilingual, official forms, tax sheets and electronic notification portals remain primarily in Spanish.

Applicants must ensure their supporting foreign documents carry sworn translations and apostilles before uploading them through the portal.
