Unpaid Malaysia eVISA applications now expire after 7 working days

What changed

Malaysia's eVISA applications now come with a deadline. Since Oct. 1, any application on the official MYVISA portal that sits in "New" or "Pending Payment" status for more than 7 working days without the required action is automatically expired and removed from the applicant's list, per a Sept. 30 report by travel planner Zaviamo citing the portal's own notice.

The portal doesn't flag or hold these files. Removed applications have to be started again from a blank form. The visa requirements and processing times themselves did not change, Zaviamo reported; the new element is the 7-working-day clock on unfinished files.

Who it catches

The rule hits any traveler who opens an eVISA application and then leaves it unfinished, for example by stopping at the payment screen while confirming dates or waiting on a document. Group and family applications are most exposed, since one traveler's slow paperwork can stall the file.

This matters most for nationalities that can't get a visa on arrival and need an approved eVISA before flying. Zaviamo noted that processing typically takes 5 to 10 working days. An application that expires and has to be refiled adds the lost days on top of that processing time. Travelers planning winter holiday trips should finish uploads and payment in one sitting, ideally weeks before departure. More background on entry is in our Malaysia guide.

What applicants should do

  • Fix dates first: Lock travel dates before creating the application, as the clock runs from the moment a file exists.
  • Upload and pay together: Have the photo, passport bio page, itinerary, accommodation proof and bank statements ready, then pay right away.
  • File the arrival card separately: The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is a free, mandatory online form completed within 3 days before arrival and isn't part of the eVISA.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to an unpaid Malaysia eVISA application?
If it stays in New or Pending Payment status for more than 7 working days without the required action, MYVISA automatically expires it and removes it from the applicant's list. The applicant must start a fresh application.
When did the rule take effect?
It has applied since Oct. 1.
How long does eVISA processing take?
Processing typically takes 5 to 10 working days, Zaviamo reported, so an expired file adds delay on top of that.
Does the eVISA replace the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card?
No. The arrival card is a separate, free and mandatory online form completed within 3 days before arrival.
