Resident nomads can now open Kakao Bank mobile accounts in South Korea

Resident nomads and expats in South Korea can now open Kakao Bank accounts on mobile in about 5 minutes, without visiting a branch. The bank launched its foreign-resident services Oct. 12, opening access to accounts, debit cards and overseas remittances through its existing app, The Korea Herald reported.
The account service covers adults aged 19 or older from more than 200 nationalities. Applicants need valid residence identification and a mobile phone registered in their own name. Five minutes isn't guaranteed: identity checks or additional screening can lengthen the process, Maeil Business Newspaper reported. Required documents can be submitted in the app.
Fee waivers cover transfers and ATM transactions
Transfers and ATM transactions are free. Kakao Bank waives its receiving fee for incoming overseas remittances, while outgoing transfers through partner Hanpass cover about 200 countries and more than 50 currencies. Outgoing remittance fees are waived for selected destinations, including the United States and China, The Korea Herald reported.
For a resident nomad receiving income from abroad each month, that means no Kakao Bank receiving fee on the monthly incoming remittance. The waiver isn't a published comparison with the customer's previous banking costs.
Resident nomads gain access, short-stay visitors don't
Foreign-resident remote workers and freelancers who meet the identification and phone requirements gain a branchless banking option. Short-term foreign visitors aren't part of this rollout; extending services to them remains a longer-term plan. English, Chinese and Vietnamese app translation is available, with customer consultations in English.
Residents can issue balance and transaction certificates for visa extensions in the app. Debit cards initially support domestic payments; international card payments are planned for early December. Account access isn't independent of immigration status: transactions will be progressively blocked when the permitted stay expires, Money Today reported.
