Ghana e-Visa users can now enter at 41 additional land and sea checkpoints

Ghana expanded its electronic visa entry options from seven selectable airports to 48 designated border crossings Sept. 25, opening land and maritime routes to online visa holders.

Land and sea routes added to digital visa portal

The expansion adds 37 land-border checkpoints and four seaports to the electronic visa system, according to industry reporting. When Ghana launched its digital visa platform on May 25, the system permitted applicants to select only seven international airports: Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Sunyani, Wa and Ho.

The update brings major land crossings into the digital application system, including Aflao and Akanu along the Togo border, Paga near Burkina Faso and Elubo on the Côte d'Ivoire border. Maritime entry points at Tema and Takoradi ports are also included in the reported list. Ghana's official immigration portal currently states that approved digital visas are valid for presentation at international airports and border crossings across the country.

The operational change follows the initial rollout of Ghana's $260 e-Visa and free ETA for African travelers, which replaced previous visa-on-arrival mechanisms for business and tourist travelers earlier in the year.

Application fees and stay conditions

Online visas remain restricted to B1 Business and B2 Tourist categories. The Ghana Immigration Service processes applications under three pricing tiers:

• Standard processing: $260, with decisions issued within 96 hours

• Priority processing: $338, with decisions issued within 48 hours

• Express processing: $442, with decisions issued within five hours

Approved visas are single-entry documents valid for 90 days from the date of issue. Travelers must enter Ghana within that 90-day window. Border immigration officers determine the actual permitted duration of stay upon arrival, which can't exceed 60 days.

Applicants filing under the tourist stream must upload proof of accommodation and evidence of sufficient financial funds, such as bank or credit card statements covering the preceding three months. Business applicants must provide corporate registration documents, tax clearance certificates and an official invitation letter. All arriving travelers must present a valid yellow-fever vaccination certificate alongside their travel authorization.

Practical steps for overland travelers

The border expansion directly affects remote workers and overland travelers moving across West Africa by road. Travelers routing through neighboring Côte d'Ivoire or Togo no longer need to route their travel through Accra's airport to use an online visa, provided their approved clearance document reflects the specific land crossing.

Applicants must plan their entry point carefully before submitting the online form. The immigration portal locks all data fields once submitted; users can't edit their application details or withdraw a file after payment. If immigration processing officers request additional documentation, applicants must upload the required files through their account dashboard within three days or the application faces rejection without a refund.

The digital visa doesn't authorize local employment or long-term residency. Remote workers exploring Ghana's entry rules must maintain standard tourist or business status, as the immigration service requires formal work permits for any domestic employment.

Unconfirmed operational details

While commercial visa tracking services reported the 48-port expansion Sept. 25, Ghanaian immigration authorities haven't published a full public gazette listing every operational crossing. The official portal confirms digital visas are accepted at border posts, but hasn't clarified whether every listed land crossing is equipped to handle both standard digital visas and African electronic travel authorizations.

Discrepancies also remain regarding fee structures for African passport holders. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that African Union citizens wouldn't pay visa fees starting in May, yet the public portal application guide maintains a flat fee schedule.
