Argentina's southernmost province now bills foreign non-residents for routine public healthcare, ending universal free consultations for temporary visitors.

Upfront payment rules replace free public consultations

Foreigners without permanent residency in Argentina must now present valid private medical insurance or pay out of pocket before receiving routine care at provincial hospitals in Tierra del Fuego. The province started applying a dedicated foreign-patient fee schedule Sept. 15, formalizing cost-recovery practices permitted under Ley Provincial 1004.

Local media report standard visits run $115, with complex surgical procedures reaching up to $10,000, converted to Argentine pesos at the official exchange rate. While provincial health authorities haven't yet published the full tariff document online, emergency treatment remains guaranteed to everyone without advance payment or proof of insurance, Health Minister Judit Di Giglio confirmed.

National health decree standardizes hospital billing

The provincial rollout aligns with federal policy. Argentina's Ministry of Health enacted Resolución 1066/2026 on Aug. 12, requiring all national-run public healthcare facilities across the country to verify insurance or collect advance payment from non-resident foreigners.

Under the national and provincial frameworks:

• Tourists and digital nomads on short-term stays or temporary visas must pay the full fee schedule for routine doctor visits, elective procedures and diagnostic tests.

• Foreign permanent residents holding an Argentine national identity document (DNI extranjero) remain covered under the standard public healthcare regime.

• Emergency patients receive immediate medical stabilization regardless of legal status, nationality or ability to pay.

Nomads and temporary visitors planning extended stays should review Argentina's residency rules and verify that international travel policies include direct-billing networks or outpatient reimbursement. Anyone navigating the public system without permanent status must carry proof of insurance or budget for upfront consultation fees at check-in.
