What to Know About Estonia's Digital Nomad Visa
Estonia continues to lead the remote work movement with its Digital Nomad Visa, a program designed for professionals who want to base themselves in one of Europe’s most tech-forward nations. To qualify, you must demonstrate a minimum gross monthly income of €4,500 earned over the six months prior to your application. This income must come from remote work for an employer registered outside Estonia, freelance work for foreign clients, or ownership of a business based abroad.
The visa provides legal residency for up to 12 months, though it does not lead to permanent residency or citizenship. While you cannot renew the visa directly, you are eligible to reapply for a second term after a six-month cooling-off period. This allows for a total stay of 548 days within any 730-day window.
Who the program affects
This pathway is built specifically for remote employees, freelancers, and business owners who rely on telecommunications to perform their duties. While the visa is individual, family members including spouses and dependent children can apply for their own visas to join the primary applicant.
If you plan to stay longer than 183 days within a 12-month period, you will become an Estonian tax resident. This means your worldwide income will be subject to a flat 20% tax rate. However, for shorter stays, most nomads continue to handle their tax obligations in their home countries.
How to apply
The application process is straightforward but requires an in-person visit to an Estonian embassy or consulate. You should prepare the following:
- Proof of a €4,500 monthly income (bank statements and contracts).
- A valid passport and travel medical insurance with €30,000 minimum coverage.
- A written explanation of your remote work setup and proof of accommodation.
- The application fee of €100 for a long-stay (D-visa).
Processing typically takes between 15 and 30 days. Keep in mind that while you can perform supplementary work for Estonian companies, your primary income must remain foreign-sourced. Check our latest visa updates for any shifts in European travel requirements.
