United Kingdom Updates Digital Rules for Children

The UK government recently opened a major consultation regarding children's digital wellbeing, signaling a potential shift in how families interact with social media and gaming. This initiative explores significant restrictions, including raising the digital age of consent from 13 to 16 and implementing overnight curfews to prevent late-night scrolling.

Officials are also looking at banning addictive design features like infinite scrolling and autoplay. These proposals follow recent legislative moves in the House of Lords that could require platforms to block under-16s entirely and mandate age verification for VPN providers. While the government has new powers to act quickly, they are currently running live pilots with families to see how these rules work in the real world.

Who is affected

For digital nomad families and expats living in the UK, these changes hit home. Many nomadic children rely on social media groups for remote schooling or to stay in touch with friends across different time zones.

If overnight curfews or strict age verification are implemented, it could disrupt these vital social lifelines. The government has clarified that parents won't be fined if children bypass these systems, but the technical barriers for younger travelers will likely increase significantly.

What you can do

The consultation is open until May 26, 2026, and the government expects to release its formal response in the summer. If you are living in the UK with children, you can participate in three ways:

  • Complete the full consultation if you work in tech or civil society.
  • Take the parents and carers survey for those with children aged 21 and under.
  • Encourage your children to fill out the youth survey (available for ages 10 to 21).
