Turkey’s 90-Day Visa Break for Australians

What changed at the border

Turkey has, honestly, dropped the e-Visa step for Australian citizens with ordinary passports and the exemption took effect on April 17, 2026. That means tourism and transit visits now get visa-free entry for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, which, surprisingly, is a real time-saver for short stays.

The change came through a presidential decree under Law No. 6458, so it’s live in the system, not just a policy hint. Work, study and longer stays still need the right permit and diplomatic or official passports follow separate rules, weirdly enough.

Who gets the benefit

Australians are the clear winners here, especially travelers mixing holiday time with transit hops and digital nomads who want a temporary base without visa paperwork. That said, the 90/180 rule still bites, so overstaying is still a bad idea.

This also helps expats planning short runs to Turkey around events or seasonal stays, but it doesn’t turn Turkey into a free-for-all. Border officers can still ask for onward travel, funds, accommodation and a passport valid for at least 6 months, so entry isn’t automatic.

What to do before you fly

Check your passport type first, because this exemption only covers ordinary passports. If you already hold an unused e-Visa, it stays valid, though you probably won’t need one for a new trip now.

Bring proof that you can leave and keep your dates tight if you’re trying to squeeze in repeat visits. Turks visiting Australia don’t get a matching waiver and visa updates can shift fast, so check official guidance before you book.
