The Small Print in the April 13 FCDO Mali Update

The program/policy
The UK FCDO updated its Mali advice on April 13 and the headline change is narrow: it trimmed some detail from the warnings page, but the core message stayed brutal , advise against all travel. That still covers Bamako, because terrorism, kidnapping, armed robbery, carjacking and civil unrest remain active risks and overland movement is, honestly, a bad bet.

The threat picture is driven by JNIM blockades and highway attacks, especially on southern and western routes where fuel trucks and travelers get targeted and that’s making road travel even more unpredictable. Flights in and out of Bamako International Airport are still operating, which, turns out, is the only realistic way in or out for most people.

Who it affects
This hits tourists, expats, digital nomads, business travelers and families equally hard, because the warning is nationwide and the risk profile doesn’t improve much in the capital. Westerners face a higher kidnapping threat and UK support outside Bamako is extremely limited, so you can’t count on an embassy rescue if things go sideways.

Other governments are aligned. The US keeps Mali at Level 4: don't Travel, while Canada, Australia, France and New Zealand also warn against travel because of terrorism, violence and unrest.

What to do
If you’re already in Mali, move on a commercial flight if it’s safe to do so and don’t wait for conditions to “settle,” because they probably won’t. Make your own evacuation plan, carry insurance and check whether your policy still pays out when a destination is under an official warning, because many don’t.

  • Avoid all overland travel
  • Enroll in STEP if you’re a US citizen
  • Keep documents, cash and exit plans ready
  • Watch for fuel shortages and sudden route closures
