Taiwan and Japan Double Working Holiday Visa Limits
Taiwan and Japan have updated their bilateral agreement to allow citizens to obtain a working holiday visa twice in their lifetime, up from the previous limit of one. This change, effective February 1, provides young travelers and remote workers more flexibility to live and work in either country for extended periods.
Taiwan and Japan Double Working Holiday Visa Limits
Taiwan and Japan have updated their bilateral working holiday agreement to allow young travelers more time to explore both nations. Effective February 1, 2026, the lifetime limit for this visa has increased from one to two visas per person. This change allows eligible participants to spend up to two years total in the partner country through two separate one-year stays.
The program is designed for youth exchange rather than long-term residency. Each visa grants a one-year stay, typically issued as a 180-day entry that can be extended once for another 180 days. While the primary purpose must be a holiday, holders are permitted to take on incidental work to help fund their travels.
Who can apply
This update specifically benefits Taiwanese and Japanese nationals aged 18 to 30. It does not apply to older digital nomads, families, or tourists from other regions. While remote workers within this age bracket can use the visa for cultural immersion, the policy prohibits employment in certain industries, such as bars or nightclubs.
Application requirements and process
To take advantage of the new visa updates, applicants must apply in person at the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association in Taiwan or the Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices in Japan. Key requirements include:
- A valid passport with at least six months of validity.
- Proof of sufficient funds, approximately ¥200,000 for those entering Japan.
- A return or onward travel ticket and medical insurance.
- A clean bill of health and no accompanying dependents.
For Japanese citizens heading to Taiwan, application fees have been waived since 2014. For those planning their 2026 travels, the first application window on the Japanese side runs from June 22 to December 18, followed by a second window starting in mid-December.
