Spain raises Digital Nomad Visa income floor to €2,849 a month

Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa now requires €2,849 a month for single applicants, tied to 200% of the updated minimum wage after the country raised its SMI to €1,221 a month in 14 payments. The change stems from Royal Decree 126/2026, which took effect retroactively from Jan. 1, 2026.

The first dependent now adds €916 a month and each additional dependent adds €305. Applicants still need foreign-sourced income, proof of remote work, a clean criminal record, private health insurance and either 3 years of work experience or top-level education.

Which remote workers feel the change

The higher income floor matters most for non-EU remote workers applying or renewing from abroad or in Spain. Spain still allows professionals to work for foreign employers or clients, with up to 20% of income from Spanish clients for some freelancers.

Families face the steepest jump. The dependent thresholds can push the visa out of reach for lower-earning applicants, while renewals still face tighter checks on annual stays and income documentation.

What applicants need to file now

Spain accepts income proof through contracts, bank statements or payslips covering at least 3 months. Applicants can apply at a consulate for a 1-year visa or through Spain’s UGE-CE route for 3-year residence, with renewals possible up to 5 years.

Fees are around €80 and processing usually takes 20 to 30 days. Read our full Spain guide for the complete picture and check visa updates for more nomad news.
