Spain and Iceland rental rates jump 206% ahead of Aug. 12 eclipse

Short-term rental rates have jumped 206% in Bilbao and 178% in Reykjavik as travelers compete for accommodation around the Aug. 12 total solar eclipse.

Eclipse-week stays top $1,000 a night

Bilbao short-term rentals are averaging about $1,088 per night, up 206% from last year, while Reykjavik rentals average roughly $1,172, a 178% increase, according to travel-industry reporting.

Hotels offer little relief in Iceland. Reykjavik rooms average about $1,012 per night, nearly double last year’s rate and 212% above the city’s average for this year. Bilbao hotels are comparatively cheaper at about $315 per night, though that’s still a 35% annual increase.

At those nightly averages, a seven-night eclipse-week rental would cost about $7,616 in Bilbao or $8,204 in Reykjavik. Nomads comparing those event prices with longer stays can find broader planning information in the Spain and Iceland guide.

Demand concentrates inside the eclipse path

Short-term rental demand within Iceland’s path of totality is running 56.9% ahead of last year, compared with 19.2% outside the corridor, according to AirDNA-based reporting. Desirable properties in major cities and resort areas are already heavily booked, leaving travelers without reservations more exposed to premium rates and minimum-stay requirements.

In Reykjavik, the partial eclipse begins at 4:47 p.m., totality arrives at 5:48 p.m. and the eclipse ends at 6:47 p.m., according to NASA. Spanish totality comes late in the evening, including 8:28 p.m. in León and 8:29 p.m. in Zaragoza.

Officials prepare for eclipse traffic

Spain has published observation points, transport recommendations and viewing-safety guidance through its official “Trio of Eclipses” portal. The government was still coordinating special security and civil protection plans in late July.

Iceland’s Transport Authority has separate rules for eclipse-related boat tours, drones and passenger flights. Commercial sightseeing boats need licenses, drone operators must register and some flight authorization requests can take three months or longer.
