South Africa Expands Electronic Travel Authorisation System
South Africa is set to expand its digital entry system, transitioning from traditional paper-based visas to an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA). This change aims to streamline border crossings and enhance security for international travelers and digital nomads entering the country.
South Africa Expands Electronic Travel Authorisation System
South Africa is moving toward a fully digital border with the second phase of its Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) rollout. This system replaces traditional paper visas with a pre-approval process that uses AI and automation to speed up entry at major airports.
While the system first went live for diplomats in late 2025, it is now available for ordinary passport holders from Mainland China, India, Indonesia, and Mexico. Travelers from these nations can use the eTA for entry through OR Tambo, Cape Town, or Lanseria international airports. Later this year, the system will expand to all international airports and major land borders, including crossings from Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, and Lesotho.
Who is affected
The eTA currently impacts tourists and business travelers from the four initial launch countries. However, the government plans to eventually require an eTA for all nationalities that currently need a visa to enter South Africa.
If you are a digital nomad from a visa-exempt country, such as the United States or the United Kingdom, your current entry process remains unchanged. Additionally, foreign nationals who already hold South African residence rights or work permits do not need an eTA.
How the process works
The application is handled entirely online before you travel. There are no on-arrival options, so you must secure authorization before heading to the airport.
- Create a secure profile on the official portal and complete the application form.
- Upload your documents and pay the fee, which varies based on reciprocal agreements between South Africa and your home country.
- Receive a digital authorization linked to your passport, featuring a QR code for your smartphone.
- Use automated immigration gates for faster clearance upon arrival.
The eTA allows for multiple entries and stays of up to 90 days. You can apply for one 90-day extension online if you need more time. If you plan to stay longer or work locally, you should look into the South Africa Digital Nomad Visa instead. Check our nomad news for the latest visa updates.
