Digital renewals replace passport center visits

Tourists, business visitors and remote workers from more than 95 countries who enter on a standard 30-day visa on arrival can now extend their stay through the official Ministry of Interior (MOI) e-services portal.

Visitors previously had to submit paperwork in person at the General Directorate of Passports or regional government service centers, the ministry confirmed.

The electronic process requires applicants to look up their file using their passport number or visa number under the portal's Visa Extension service. The system verifies identity data, updates legal stay limits electronically and issues a downloadable confirmation receipt, eliminating physical passport processing.

Extension rules, fees and penalty thresholds

Applicants must hold a passport valid for at least six months and maintain qualifying medical coverage. The MOI website connects directly to approved domestic insurers to verify active coverage before processing any extension.

Standard extension conditions include:

• A renewal fee of QAR 200 ($55) per 30-day extension.

• Daily overstay fines of QAR 200 ($55) for visits extending past authorized dates.

• Electronic payment through debit cards, credit cards or linked digital wallets.

Nomads relying on visa-on-arrival status must submit their digital applications before their initial 30-day window expires. Missing the cutoff triggers immediate daily penalties of QAR 200 ($55), so visitors managing short-term stays in Qatar should purchase compliant health coverage and complete the online payment several days before their initial entry period ends.
