Paraguay allows residents to extend absence limits for a 234,154 guaraní fee

Paraguay formalized a procedure allowing temporary and permanent residents to exceed statutory absence limits without forfeiting their immigration status.

New authorization rules for extended travel

Paraguay's Law Nº 6.984/2022 mandates the cancellation of permanent residency after more than three consecutive years of unjustified absence, while temporary status lapses after more than one year. Under Resolution DNM N° 376/2026, published Aug. 10, foreign residents can secure advance permission to extend those thresholds instead of risking automatic revocation.

The regulation allows permanent residents to request up to one additional year abroad, granting a maximum unbroken absence of four years. Temporary holders can receive authorization covering travel up to their deadline for extending status or converting to permanent residency.

A single physical re-entry into the country resets the absence counter, which immigration authorities calculate from the date of last exit.

Filing timelines, fees and required documentation

Remote workers and expats holding residency in Paraguay must submit a physical application to the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones before crossing the absence limits. Permanent residents need to apply up to three months before hitting their three-year cutoff. Temporary permit holders must file within one month before reaching their 12-month threshold.

The administrative fee costs two jornales, set at ₲234,154 (around $39). Applicants must submit a formal letter detailing the reasons for their prolonged stay outside Paraguay, alongside copies of their passport, residence card and national cédula.

The agency also mandates documented proof of local ties, including residential leases, property titles, local tax registrations or active bank accounts, ensuring applicants maintain genuine ties to the country.
