New Zealand’s April 30 threshold hike hits family sponsors

The policy is simple and annoying. Immigration New Zealand is raising income and sponsorship thresholds for the Parent Category Resident Visa, Parent Boost Visitor Visa, Pacific Access Category and Samoan Quota, with the higher bars kicking in for applications lodged on or after April 30, 2026.

The numbers are tied to the June 2025 median wage, now set at NZD $35 an hour instead of $33.56, so sponsors have to show more income and in some cases more of it over the right tax years, which, surprisingly, is the whole point of the change. For the Pacific Access Category and Samoan Quota, applicants with dependent children now need NZD $55,404.96 a year, up from NZD $54,133.04.

Who feels this most? Families. Expat residents trying to bring parents in will face tighter proof rules and Parent Boost sponsors now need NZD $72,800 for one parent, scaling to NZD $254,800 for six, while two sponsors start at NZD $109,200. That’s steep, frankly and it could slow family reunification for people who were already budgeting carefully.

Tourists, standard visitors and digital nomads aren’t directly affected, so your short stay plans aren’t changing because of this update. Still, if you’re relying on a residency pathway that depends on a sponsor’s income, the bar just went up and it’s worth checking the exact threshold before you file anything.

What to do now

If you’re sponsoring a parent or Pacific family member, check your tax records for the two of the three required NZ tax years, then compare them against the updated calculator or sponsor page before you lodge. Applications filed before April 30 should stay under the old thresholds, but anything submitted after that date gets the new test.

Don’t guess.
Check the maths.
Then file.
