New Zealand adds 6 month Short-term Graduate Work Visa starting Nov. 16

A six-month bridge visa and a widened Post Study Work Visa
New Zealand will roll out a Short-term Graduate Work Visa and broaden eligibility for the existing Post Study Work Visa (PSWV) in the second half of 2026, with immigration advisors pointing to Nov. 16, 2026 as the target start date. The government announced the package in March.
The new visa gives graduates who don't qualify for the PSWV up to six months of open work rights, meaning holders can work for almost any employer in almost any role. It's a one-time visa, can't be used for self-employment and requires at least NZD 5,000 in available funds. Eligible applicants must hold an NZQCF Level 5, 6 or 7 qualification studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks and the qualification can't be an English language, foundation or bridging course.
The PSWV expansion adds a new route for holders of a Level 7 Graduate Diploma completed in New Zealand, provided the applicant also holds a bachelor's degree from New Zealand or overseas. PSWV duration under this pathway matches the study period, capped at 12 months. Only one PSWV is granted per lifetime.
Who gains a pathway
International students in vocational and sub-degree programs gain a post-study work route many never had. Graduate Diploma students with a prior bachelor's pick up a year of open work rights they previously couldn't access.
Aspiring expats using study as an on-ramp to residence now have a clearer chain: student visa, then Short-term Graduate Work Visa or PSWV, then the Accredited Employer Work Visa. Remote workers planning to freelance should note the Short-term Graduate Work Visa bars self-employment, so nomads who run their own businesses won't fit this route.
Graduates who already used a PSWV can't reset under the new rules. Tourists and visitors aren't affected.
Timing and next steps
The rules aren't live yet. Current students and near-term graduates should apply under existing settings until the changes take effect, then assess the new routes.
Immigration New Zealand hasn't published the final detailed policy page, including the application window after a student visa expires that some advisors describe as three months.
