Mauritius mandates 21 day quarantine for arrivals from Ebola hit regions

Ebola entry curbs and 21-day quarantine

Mauritius barred most short-term visitors arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and South Sudan and imposed a 21-day mandatory quarantine on permitted arrivals with recent travel to those countries. The Cabinet declared the measures under the Quarantine Act 2020 for the period June 8 to Aug. 7, 2026, citing Ebola outbreaks across the three states.

Foreign nationals who have been in DRC, Uganda or South Sudan within the previous 21 days and who don't hold a Mauritian work permit, residence permit, occupation permit, business visa or student visa can't enter. The rule tracks physical presence, so routing through a third country doesn't reset the clock.

The SAJ Recreation Centre in Riambel has been designated as the official quarantine facility. The Cabinet decision doesn't specify whether quarantined arrivals pay for their stay and the Foreign Affairs Ministry hasn't published a fee schedule.

Who gets caught by the rules

Tourists and digital nomads on visa-free stays who have recently been in the three affected countries are turned away at boarding or arrival. Permit-holding expats, remote workers on occupation permits and international students keep their right to enter, but lose 21 days to mandatory isolation on return.

The Cabinet has also asked organizers to scale back international events involving participants from DRC, Uganda or South Sudan and postponed the planned African Union Summit in Mauritius. Travelers with no recent presence in the three countries face no Ebola-specific restrictions, though all arrivals still undergo health screening.

Paperwork and screening at the border

Every passenger must complete the All-in-One Travel Form and a health declaration before boarding a flight or vessel to Mauritius. Missing forms can delay boarding.

On arrival, travelers face thermal screening, document checks and risk-assessment interviews. Anyone showing Ebola-compatible symptoms is isolated for clinical assessment. Travelers from malaria-endemic countries can also be asked for a blood sample on arrival, separate from the Ebola protocol.

The Cabinet says it's coordinating with the World Health Organization, Africa CDC and the Indian Ocean Commission, so the August expiry date could be extended, lifted or modified depending on regional case counts. Check the latest visa updates before booking.
