Malaysia targets Sept. 2026 for nationwide MyNIISe biometric border rollout

Malaysia sets Sept. 2026 for nationwide MyNIISe biometric border rollout
Malaysia's Immigration Department is phasing in MyNIISe, a biometric and QR-code clearance system, with full nationwide fast-track immigration targeted for September 2026 across roughly 125 international entry points. The platform replaces the MyIMMs system used for nearly two decades and combines passport verification, visa checks, facial recognition and traveler data into a single clearance flow.
QR-code trials launched at the Johor Causeway and Second Link land checkpoints on Sept. 22, 2025, running through Feb. 28, 2026 and open to Malaysians plus travelers from 63 countries. Airport integration began around March 1, 2026, with 46 e-gates deployed at KLIA Terminal 1, KLIA Terminal 2, Penang (Bayan Lepas), Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.
Who can use the e-gates
Eligible foreign travelers from roughly 63 countries, foreign residents holding valid passes and Malaysian citizens all fall within scope, the Immigration Department said. Frequent flyers, expats and digital nomads moving through KLIA or the Singapore land crossings stand to see the biggest time savings once enrollment is complete.
Travelers from countries not yet on the eligibility list or anyone with a damaged or non-biometric passport, will keep using manual counters or existing e-gates during the transition.
Registering and clearing the gate
Foreign users need to set up the MyNIISe app before using the QR lanes. The published process:
- Download the MyNIISe app from Google Play, the Apple App Store or Huawei AppGallery.
- Scan the passport photo page, then read the biometric chip via NFC.
- Take a selfie to enable facial-recognition matching.
- Generate a MyNIISe QR code to scan at the e-gate, with one code valid for a full travel group.
A valid machine-readable e-passport with a working biometric chip is required and travelers may need to submit digital arrival information before or upon arrival. No separate government fee for using MyNIISe e-gates has been published, beyond standard visa and entry charges. The legacy MyBorderPass app and manual lanes remain available during the rollout.
