Ferry seats between mainland Kedah and Langkawi are still capped at three sailings a day per route and that has been the operational reality since March 25, 2026.

Three sailings, not five

Ferry Line Ventures cut both the Kuala Kedah,Langkawi and Kuala Perlis,Langkawi routes from five daily trips down to three, blaming a jump in industrial diesel from about RM3.20 to RM7.30 a litre, Bernama reported. No restore date has been announced.

The operator's live timetable still shows morning, afternoon and evening departures, with occasional extra sailings tagged onto peak dates and holidays. Regular weekdays run on the three-trip baseline and sold-out slots appear directly on the booking portal.

A targeted bunker fuel surcharge took effect April 20, layered on top of ticket prices. Foreign passenger fares were raised April 15: Kuala Perlis to Langkawi runs RM45 adult, RM35 child and Kuala Kedah to Langkawi runs RM55 adult, RM42 child. Malaysian adult fares sit around RM24 from Kuala Perlis and RM30 from Kuala Kedah.

What it means for nomads and visa runners

Anyone in Langkawi using the ferry to reach the mainland for a flight, a bus connection to Thailand or a visa reset has to plan around a much thinner schedule. Three sailings per route means a missed boat can cost half a day and holiday weekends have been running near capacity even with extra trips bolted on.

Book the crossing before locking in onward transport, not after. For visa-critical travel, aim for the morning departure and treat the afternoon sailing as the backup, not the plan. The operator warns that schedules can change without prior notice, so screenshot the confirmed departure and check the portal again the day before.

Residents and NGOs protested at Kuah Passenger Jetty on April 19 and 20 demanding federal intervention to restore the five-trip schedule. Nothing has moved on that front. Long-stayers weighing whether Langkawi still works as a base can cross-check onward logistics in the Malaysia guide before committing to a lease.
