Malaysia and Singapore are targeting a January 2027 launch for a joint digital immigration system and extra lanes at their land crossings, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said July 5.
What changes at the Causeway
The two governments plan to switch on a shared digital clearance setup at the Johor,Singapore checkpoints, paired with additional physical lanes at the Causeway and Second Link. Anwar said the system will be launched jointly with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong once technical work and infrastructure are finished, with a target of processing travelers in a few seconds using biometric and QR-based screening.
The rollout also lines up with the RTS Link rail crossing between Woodlands and Bukit Chagar, which begins operations on Jan. 1, 2027. Malaysia's MyNIISe system will handle clearance at the Bukit Chagar ICQS from day one.
What travelers already use today
Both sides have been layering on digital tools ahead of the joint launch. On the Singapore side, the MyICA app lets travelers arriving by car, motorcycle, lorry or bus show a QR code instead of a passport, except for first-time foreign visitors or anyone entering on a different passport than their last trip. On the Malaysian side, the MyNIISe QR trial runs at Johor land borders and at KLIA T1/T2, Penang, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu airports through Feb. 28, 2026, with travelers from 63 countries and long-term pass holders eligible to use QR clearance from Jan. 1, 2026.
Foreign visitors entering Malaysia still need to file the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card up to three days before arrival, a rule in force since Jan. 1, 2024. Singapore citizens, diplomatic passport holders and Malaysian long-term pass holders are exempt.
What to do before the switchover
Frequent commuters and nomads based in Johor, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore should register for both the MyICA and MyNIISe apps now and complete biometric enrolment during the current trial window, rather than waiting for January. Carry a physical passport regardless, since spot checks and exceptions still apply under the QR systems and check the Malaysia guide for entry document details tied to your nationality.
