Laos now requires tour operators to submit confirmed hotel booking documents with tourist entry paperwork for organized groups. The rule took effect around mid-May 2026 and applies to approvals sent to Lao immigration and tourism police, according to reports.

The requirement mainly affects travelers entering on organized tours or through agencies, including routes that come in from Thailand, Vietnam and China. Independent visitors using visa-on-arrival or eVisas are less directly affected, though accommodation proof is still often asked for at borders.

Long-term expats and many digital nomads aren't the main target unless they are traveling as part of an organized group. Hotels still handle residence registration for stays longer than 24 hours.
