Inside Ghana's Updated Residency and Permit Framework

Ghana has refined its immigration landscape with a standardized fee structure and a clearer roadmap for those looking to stay long-term. While the primary fee hikes were established in mid-2025, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) is now enforcing a more rigid compliance schedule for 2026. These updates aim to streamline the transition from temporary visitor to permanent resident, particularly for the African diaspora and high-value investors.

Who is affected by the revised costs

The changes impact nearly every category of foreign national, though costs vary significantly by nationality. Digital nomads and remote workers fall under the "Other Nationals" category, facing the highest tier of fees. Short-term travelers will see minor increases for visa extensions, typically between GH¢26 and GH¢65.

Long-term residents face more substantial costs. A standard residence permit linked to a work permit now ranges from $300 to over $1,000, depending on the sponsoring entity. Additionally, those pursuing the residency-to-citizenship path must account for mandatory medical exams at GIS clinics, which cost approximately $250.

How to manage your stay in Ghana

If you are planning to remain in Ghana beyond a standard tourist entry, you should prioritize your extension or residency application well before your current stamps expire. The GIS has increased transparency but also intensified enforcement; overstaying your permit now carries a penalty of $100 per month.

To apply for a residence permit, you will generally need:

  • A completed GIS application form and recent passport photos.
  • A letter of support or bond from two Ghanaian guarantors.
  • Proof of financial self-sufficiency, such as bank statements.
  • A valid tenancy agreement or proof of accommodation.
  • A medical clearance certificate from the GIS headquarters.

The government is also fast-tracking certain residency pathways for the diaspora, focusing on residency proof rather than DNA testing. For the latest visa updates, always verify specific fees with the GIS headquarters in Accra or regional offices, as revenue-focused adjustments are periodically reviewed for compliance.
