Inside El Salvador’s Remote Work Residency

El Salvador continues to attract remote workers with a residency pathway that offers a significant tax advantage. Established in April 2025, the program allows digital nomads to live in the country for one year, with the option to renew for up to four years total. The biggest draw remains the zero percent income tax on foreign-sourced earnings, a benefit bolstered by the country’s unique position using Bitcoin as legal tender.

Who Qualifies for the Visa

This program targets remote employees, freelancers, and entrepreneurs who work exclusively for entities outside El Salvador. To qualify, individuals must show a minimum monthly income of $1,460. Families are also welcome, though the income requirement increases to $2,190 for households of three or more.

Because the visa bars holders from local employment, it is primarily designed for those who want to swap high-cost hubs for El Salvador’s lower cost of living. It serves as a long-term alternative for nomads who have outstayed the typical 90-day tourist exemption.

Application Steps and Costs

The process is handled through the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería, often under the Rentista or temporary work authorization categories. You can apply at a Salvadoran consulate or while in-country. Expect to provide:

  • A passport valid for at least six months.
  • Twelve months of bank statements proving the $1,460 monthly threshold.
  • Proof of remote work, such as contracts or invoices.
  • A clean criminal record from the last two years and international health insurance.

Total costs generally range between $250 and $500, covering application fees and the residency card. Approval typically takes about 45 days, but it is wise to allow up to four months for the entire administrative process. Once approved, you must ensure you do not leave the country for more than six consecutive months to maintain your status. Stay updated on the latest visa updates as requirements evolve.
