India Transitions to Mandatory e-Arrival Cards
All foreign travelers and OCI cardholders must submit a digital e-Arrival Card prior to entry, as paper forms will be phased out by March 31, 2026. Travelers will need to present a QR code confirmation to airlines during check-in and at immigration checkpoints.
India Transitions to Mandatory e-Arrival Cards
India has officially retired paper immigration forms, completing its shift to a fully digital entry system. Foreign nationals and OCI cardholders must now submit an e-Arrival Card before landing in the country. This digital requirement aims to streamline the border process, with pilot programs showing a 40% reduction in wait times at major hubs like Delhi and Bengaluru.
The mandate applies to all travelers entering India on tourist, business, medical, or student visas, as well as those on e-visas. Digital nomads and expats on long-term stays are included in this requirement. If you are a transit passenger who needs to clear immigration, you must also complete the form. Indian citizens remain the only group exempt from this filing.
Practical Steps for Travelers
The submission window opens 72 hours before your flight and remains open until departure. The process is free of charge and can be completed via the official e-Arrival portal or the Su-Swagatam app.
- You will need to provide passport details, flight information, and your local address in India.
- Families traveling together can submit a single form for up to five members.
- After submission, you will receive a QR code via email.
Airlines are now strictly auditing these codes during check-in. It is a good idea to keep a printed copy or a screenshot of your QR code on your phone in case of connectivity issues upon arrival. If your flight details change after you have already submitted the form, you will need to file a new one to ensure your data matches your manifest.
