India ends boarding pass stamps at all international airports Sept. 1

International travelers flying out of India no longer need physical stamps on their boarding passes to clear departure immigration.

Digital passes accepted nationwide

India's Bureau of Immigration (BoI) discontinued boarding pass stamping on Sept. 1 at departure immigration counters across all international airports. The directive allows travelers to present an e-boarding pass on a smartphone or a standard printed pass, neither of which will receive physical ink stamps during exit control.

The procedural update applies to everyone departing on international flights, including tourists, remote workers, foreign residents and Indian citizens. Manual stamping caused checkpoint bottlenecks and administrative errors from illegible ink marks, the Foreigners Regional Registration Office reported.

What changes at departure control

Standard border checks remain unchanged. Travelers must still present a valid passport alongside any required visas or permits before exiting the country. Those planning long stays in India will still undergo standard departure scrutiny by immigration officers, who visually check flight data and scan digital credentials at the booth.

Passengers enrolled in India's Fast Track Immigration Trusted Traveller Programme can use digital boarding passes directly at automated e-gates. To avoid delays at manual counters, travelers should save their digital boarding pass to an offline phone wallet or screenshot beforehand, since weak airport Wi-Fi can stall loading screens at the counter.

Printed boarding passes remain fully accepted for passengers without charged phones, but officers will hand them back unstamped.
