Hungary’s investor permit stays open

Hungary’s Guest Investor Residence Permit is still active after the April elections. No official termination has been announced, though the new Fidesz government could review investment-based residency rules later.
The permit is for non-EU and non-EEA nationals who invest in Hungary’s economic interest. Current options include a €250,000 investment in a qualifying real estate fund or a €1 million donation to certain higher education institutions.
Who can use it
The permit gives holders a 10-year residence card that can be renewed for another 10 years. It carries no minimum stay requirement, full work rights and Schengen travel access and family members can apply for reunification permits.
That makes it relevant for expats, investors and some remote workers who want a longer-term base in Europe. Tourists are unaffected and Hungary’s separate self-employment permits are unchanged.
How applications work now
Applicants start with a Guest Investor Visa, which can be valid for up to 6 months and is filed at a consulate abroad. After entering Hungary, they must complete the investment within 3 months and then apply for the residence permit within 30 to 93 days of first entry.
The permit is supposed to be decided in 21 days, with appeals available within 8 days. Read our full Hungary guide for the complete picture and check our visa updates page for more policy changes.
